Challenge

The RAD 40 was designed from scratch as a 40kW electric outboard and required additional engineering support to endure harsh marine conditions.

Solution

RAD integrated TECHNIA engineers into their team, using our expertise in EV design and simulation to assist in the product’s development and design.

Results

The concurrent engineering collaboration across various design aspects led to a successful prototype and market launch, with the RAD 40 now available through RAD Propulsion Ltd.

Founded in 2018, RAD Propulsion is transforming the marine industry with its innovative electric propulsion systems. The company is dedicated to delivering sustainable, high-performance solutions for boat builders, commercial operators, and leisure boat customers.

RAD’s electric systems harness modern power control, software, and connectivity technologies, offering superior usability and design. With products like the RAD 40 and a growing portfolio, RAD is driving forward the future of clean, reliable, and efficient marine propulsion.

CAD and CAE support for a 40kw electric outboard motor

Unlike the current industry practice of replacing the IC engine with an e-motor and keeping the overall design intact, the RAD 40, a 40kW electric outboard, was designed and developed from the ground up.

RAD required additional engineering input to the mechanical design and came to us for support to ensure the RAD 40 was able to withstand the extreme conditions of the marine environment.

Leveraging EV design and simulation expertise

RAD worked with TECHNIA to support the RAD 40 development. While RAD retained design authority, TECHNIA engineers were seamlessly integrated into the team, leveraging our extensive experience in EV design and simulation and contributing to the development, research, and design details of the product.

Ensuring the optimal manufacturable solution using MODSIM

The support covered drive line design, castings, seals, electrical layout, cooling circuits, the selection of standard components, and coordinating with manufacturers to ensure optimal suitability. The finalized design was first submitted for prototype manufacturing, and following the successful market launch, it is now available for supply through RAD Propulsion Ltd.

Learn more about concurrent engineering

Most product design and simulation activities are performed today as siloed disciplines, often using separate – and possibly incompatible – software. In this first episode of our MODSIM webinar series, we show how integrated simulation helps engineers and product design teams confidently deliver the right product at the right time.
